UPDATED: Congrats to Vince for winning our tickets! Thanks to everyone who entered!
Everyone loves French films, right? Okay, not this guy. It’s pretty bad to dismiss an entire country and their filmmaking, but hey, I’m a nerdy nerd guy and I like what I like. That’s not to say that the French are completely talentless — they gave us Michel Gondry without whom we’d never have heard of the fine art of sweding. Oh, and Jean-Pierre Jeunet, who directed “Amelie” and “The City Of Lost Children.” Those were pretty cool.
Well, you can catch Jean-Pierre Jeunet‘s latest film “Micmacs” when Fresno Filmworks presents its monthly screenings at the Tower Theater this Friday, September 10th, 5:30 and 8 p.m. I do have to say, the film looks whimsical and pretty friggan’ cool overall, even if it is a French film. Plus the reviews I’ve read have generally been good! The cool part? You can get in for FREE as Filmworks has hooked us up with a pair of tickets good for either screening. You can win them by leaving a comment here and telling us your favorite French film. Are you like me and not a huge fan? Well, at least tell us your favorite French character in a movie then. Leave your comment by Thursday, September 9th at 11 p.m. We’ll get our Randomatorâ„¢ to draw a name, and we will email that person, so be sure to leave us a real email address. We will also post the winner here on Friday, September 10th, so check back if you’re wondering. One entry per person, but feel free to comment as many times as you’d like. Check out the trailer for the film after the break, good luck, and we hope to see you all at the screening this Friday!
My favorite French film is – well, I think its French – it's a short that Filmworks showed a few years ago about a girl who was riding her bicycle and was hit by a car and died. The camera followed what happened immediately afterward and the girl describes as if she's watching how they got into her apartment to find her address book and notify her mother, how her group of friends reacted individually and as a group – it was sad but very real. I can't remember what it was called. But I'm pretty sure it was French:) Did I win?
I've seen very few French films over the years. But I think I'll have to go with Haute Tension. Interesting horror film coming out of France, after being bored with most of what comes out of Hollywood. Also does Leon (The Professional) count? Another great!
This is a tough one because I really enjoy French films, a lot. The first foreign film I ever saw was Louis Malle's Au Revoir Les Enfants at the Tower Theater.
Overall, I would have to say that my favorite French films come from the mind of Jean-Luc Godard. So, I will go with Contempt. A fantastic French film with some American flair. It's a superb film! Plus, the title song was used by Martin Scorsese years later in his film Casino.
Probably not my favorite Fresnch film of ALL TIME – but I recently saw Luc Besson's Angel-A…which was very very good.
Favorite Character in a "French" film? Pappy Doyle in "A French Connection"!
How could you not go with "Leon" aka "The Professional"? Jeano Reno was amazing in that movie.
Pepe Le Pew!
I'd say Amelie is my favorite. Audrey Tautou is absolutely adorable.
wasabi
All I know is I HATE Fraunch manicures and I LOVE Amelie!
Amelie is my favorite french film and character!
I loved The Triplets of Belleville!
"La science des rêves" or better known as the science of sleep….although I'm biased….I love almost anything Gael Garcia Bernal does…
Betty Blue, Diva, Trois Couleurs (entire trilogy), La Femme Nikita, The Big Blue, The Double Life of Veronique, Jean de Florette, Manon of the Spring, The Story of Adele H, Indochine, The City of Lost Children…
Does Inspector Clousseau count?
I saw Elevator to the Gallows when FF showed it in Tower. I loved it. There's something about French films that is so completely entrancing. I saw the trailer to Micmacs a couple of weeks ago, and I can't wait to see it.
I missed Micmacs when it was at the Palm, so I'm thrilled to get to see it at the Tower! "yes!" *happy dance*
Let's see…can I name a few of my favorites instead of just one?
Of course…City of Lost Children, Amelie, Delicatessen, Foutaises, etc…
le Ballon Rouge; Science is Fiction; Pierrot Le fou; Bande a part; the Chorus; Triplets of Belleville…okay I'll stop. *happy sigh*
