Know this: Tom Hansen is in love with Summer Finn. The only other thing you gotta know is that (500) Days Of Summer is pretty damn good. The unorthodox structure of the story works very well as the audience is taken for a fun romp through the relationship between the main characters. Seeing the highs followed immediately by the lows help put every thing in perspective and doesn’t allow the viewer to forget about the peaks & valleys in everything. First time director Marc Webb has done a truly commendable job in translating the written in to the visual with the use of multi-camera setups, dance numbers & animation segments inter cut within the film. It’s kinda odd to see the kid from 3rd Rock From The Sun acting in a serious film but Gordon-Levit does a good job, as does Deschanel as the title character. Another highlight was the soundtrack for the film, which is really well done and features some catchy tunes to complement you on your journey.
We are given hope at the beginning of the film even though we’re told from the beginning that this is not a love story but rather a story about love. An image is presented jump off that might color your view of the rest of the film but the ending seems very much satisfying for me. I couldn’t help to come out of this film feeling a tad bit let down (and I still can’t figure out why but the internal hype for this film has been brewing for quite sometime) but it’s still one of the better films I’ve seen this year and definitely one of the more enjoyable ones. Totally recommend you grab a friens and head on out and catch this before it goes away to make room for GI Joe (which also stars Gordon-Levit as Cobra Commander) this Friday. Penis! (watch the movie and you’ll get it)
Great review. I’m glad that it’s as good as I hope. Although We’ve seen Gordon-Levit in other dramatic rolls such as Brick and The Lookout.
