Sony announces price drop on current PS3 systems, announces new PS3 Slim for next month

UPDATE: Engadget has a bunch of new pics of the system here. It seems the system is wider but shorter than the original. Hmmm… Also, the math doesn’t seem to add up for me: This new system will be $299 and the older systems will drop to the same price. Why would people buy the older systems? I’m wondering if this model is lacking something that the older brother has. Built-in wireless, perhaps? All speculation on my part but we’ll wait and see.

If you’ve been contemplating in purchasing a Playstation 3, things just got even better for you. With the announcement of a smaller, more streamlined redesign of the original, wall heater sized black box, Sony also announced universal price drops for the current systems in stores now. The PS3 Slim will be in stores the first week in September for $299 and sport a 120GB hard drive. The new design is 33 percent smaller, 36 percent lighter and uses 34 percent less power than the original and as details roll in, we will keep updating this post. Is this enough to get you to go out and purchase?
