Dem Reviews: Let The Right One In

9c5ed0fed3Twlight was released on DVD this past Friday night and I was hyped up! Not for the film but for Vintage Fridays happening over at Palominos (if you didn’t attend, you missed out. It was awesome!). But rather than make this a completely vampire-less weekend, my good friend Netflix Queue sent me a copy of the Swedish film Let The Right One In. I have been hearing nothing but glowing reviews of the film (Harry Knowles over at Aintitcoolnews.com named it as his best film of 2008 and called it quite possibly “the best Vampire film ever made”!) and although it has been around the webernetz for a while, I wanted to wait to check it out in it’s full glory properly with a non-bootlegged image. Now with all the noise Twilight has received from mainstream everything, the trailers for the film left no impression on me whatsoever. Not even an inkling to see the film and I probably never will as I’ve heard mostly negative stuff about it but you never know. Now because of this, I can only theorize that my assumption that LTROI is what Twilight could of been if it had been stripped of all it’s staple gunned, superfluous, Hollywood unnecessary bullshit and focused strictly on storytelling & henceforth an independent film that is 100 times better than the processed Hollywood head cheese. LTROI was an amazing film that seems really simple in it’s execution but worked beautifully as it’s narrative really carries the film very far. No tricks, no CGI just some good old fashion horror and some puppy love thrown in for good measure. Best vampire movie of all time? Guess that all comes down to how you like your vampire films? Blood & gore and nothng else. Probably not gonna be for you (although there’s some pretty grisly scenes in the film). something with more weight on the story? Then this might very well be up there on your list.

And for those who have seen Twilight & LTROI, by all means: let us know how you feel about the two films and prove me wrong on my guess that Hollywood has created another bloated carcass of a film aimed at the tween segment. Otherwise, I think I can sleep well knowing that I can continue shitting on movies that I’ve never seen :)

3.5 Stars (out of 5)

  1. I definitely want to see this film!

And I’ll put your mind at rest now, Twilight was made for the disposable income of tweens and people like me that latch on to fantastical story lines. :)
